Ein neues Uhrmacherhandwerk

A new watchmaker's trade 
3D metal printing is a central aspect of my work. The specific concept of adding material instead of removing it requires new, unconventional thinking when designing. The use of 3D printing allows the creation of unparalleled designs with extensive customization options. Although seemingly paradoxical to this use of State of the art, every part of the clock in my studio is made by hand. Presented at the EPHJ - the precision fair for the watch industry in Geneva - in 2018 as a collaboration between Holthinrichs Watches and Britisch Jewelry and precious metals specialist Cookson Gold. 

This watch is a true novelty as it is the first with a solid gold case specifically designed for the 3D printing technology. Together with an extensively hand finished movement it is an unparalleled accomplishment: a new craft in watchmaking. 
The movement is extensively hand finished with handmade bevels and polished edges (called “anglage”) applied on the altered movement plates and gears to fully emphasise the beauty that only manual finishing can achieve. Furthermore circular graining (“perlage”), Sonnenschlief grinding patterns on the winding gears and an improved compass to more precisely regulate the timekeeping can be found as exceptional details on the watch. All work is conducted in Atelier Holthinrichs. In total it takes more than 160 hours to complete the watch. 
Bespoke: The Ornament 1 18K gold model is exclusively made on request, and thus unique. The client is closely involved in the process of the making of the watch. Besides the option of having a bespoke text embedded in the case of the watch, he can actually influence the finishing by directing:
